The story of Fethiye Surf Center has started by Sener Aykurt`s first steps into windsurfing and after him his siblings (Yener, Taner and Bengul Aykurt) followed his foot prints, that was in 1988-89. At the beggining this was just an exciting hobby and sport.We were windsurfing all day long, tring to improve our windsurf skills but then we started to work for a watersports company, so our hobby had become professionally work for us.(1992-93) Therefore, we started to run windsurfing part of watersports in 1994 in Calis beach and finally we have got our own windsurfing school in 1995 at Calıs beach. During all that years passed always we ve been keep tring to improve our center and our teaching/riding skills one step forward...
In 2000, a middle-age British guy (Peter) came and tried kitesurfing first time at our beach. He tried hard but he failed kiteboarding in our beach. He hadnt have any instruction, that time kiteboard centers were not as many as nowdays, he had bought his first kite second hand and a instruction video from his friend and all winter long he had been watching this video and when summer arrived he had came to our beach to try...So we had a chance to meet this amazing sport. Peter explain us very basic piloting, afterwards, me (Taner) had first try,i was able to get on the board and ride my first 50m. that was my first impression after this riding : "that it was my sport!!!" Then, we bought Peter`s kite and sold him some windsurfing lessons, so I had my first kite: Naish 2 liner 7m. and F-one directional board!
Even if the first kiteboarding trial was successful, it took me one summer to be able to ride upwind and able to go anywhere i wish on the water. It is common fate of new beginners that riding downwind and walking back by beach : "shame of walk" At the begining it was fun, people were admiring cause they have never seen something like this before. But after few times it started to became hard to have to walk 3 km along the beach to the back with all stuff. Everybody was windsurfing at the center and they were having fun of me cause i was riding one way and walk back :) now everyone is kiteboarding...
In 2001 our center started to offer kiteboarding courses. It was maybe first in Turkey and even in the world there wasn t many kite schools...We used advantage of being one of the first and experience, we got some good results national and international competitions. Taner Aykurt, one of the partner of Fethiye Surf Center and same time our instructor, has became Freestyle champion in Turkey in 2006, 2007 and 2008, and then has second place in 2009. And he got second place in course race category in Kiteboard Asia Tour 2009-Hong Kong, 1st place again at course race category at Kiteboard Asia Tour- Boracay. Also other partner and our instructor Yener Aykurt is speed champion of 2007.
